Back in 2013, Taylor Swift and Prince William sat next to each other at a fundraising event that was held at Kensington Palace. In 2014, Swift talked about the experience on “The Graham Norton Show.” Recently, Prince William explained his memory of the experience during an episode of the the series “Time to Walk.” 

Although Swift and Prince William both remember singing on stage together with Jon Bon Jovi while he performed “Livin’ on a Prayer,” their story varies about what motivated them to get on stage in the first place place. According to Swift, Prince William asked her to go on stage with him. She explained, “I was very nervous for the whole thing because it was at Kensington Palace and it was my first royal encounter of sorts. Jon Bon Jovi was on stage and he was about to sing ‘Living on a Prayer’ and he kinda pointed to Prince William and said something like, ‘I hear you like to do this at karaoke night, karaoke boy.’”

Then Swift explained that Prince William asked her to go on stage with him. She said, “He just looks at me and is like, ‘You gotta go with me, you gotta go with me’ and I was like, ‘All right.'”

Prince William remembers the experience differently. He believes that Swift was the one who asked him to go on stage with her. He said, “I’m sat next to Taylor Swift. She’s on my left. And after Jon does his first song, there’s a pause, and she turns to me. She puts her hand on my arm, looks me in the eye and says, ‘Come on, William. Let’s go and sing.’”

According to Prince William, he “got up like a puppy and went, ‘Yeah, OK, that seems like a great idea ― I’ll follow you.’”

Prince William said, “Honestly, even now I’m cringing at what happened next, and I don’t understand why I gave in.”

He felt like he was in a trance for the first half of the song, but halfway through he realized he was on stage singing in front of a lot of people, and he didn’t even remember the words to the song. He clarified, “A lot of people might think that I’m comfortable onstage. When I do speeches and things like that, I’ve done so many now, they’re not a problem, but I’ve not done singing.”
