By now you’ve heard congratulations are in order for the newly engaged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple made their official announcement to the world this past Monday.

Media outlets have been speculating for months on the if, when, and how a proposal would happen. Though the tiniest details have remained private (as they should), the two revealed a little about the special moment during an exclusive interview with BBC News.

What we know is that their courtship began over a year ago after being introduced by a mutual friend. Since then, the prince and Meghan have fallen in love, spent time with each family, and made moves to live their lives together.

Meghan, an American actress, has moved overseas to be with Prince Harry on a full-time basis. If you haven’t seen their full interview, you’ll notice in this clip how smitten they are with one another. When asked about how he popped the question, she was somewhat coy but lovestruck.

They both shared that Prince Harry proposed earlier this month during a quiet night at home, which is at Nottingham Cottage. As they talked about the moment, Meghan said this in her own words:

“It was a cozy night — we were roasting chicken. It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee.”

Thought their sweet love story is enchanting many people right now, the part about the chicken has been capturing a lot of attention. They were cooking a roast chicken together when he caught her off guard. The prince was trying to cook chicken? How romantic! The sweet prince smiled as he said:

“It was a really nice moment. It was just the two of us. . .and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well.”

Holding hands, they spoke about how excited Meghan was as she said “Yes!” He could barely finish as he tried to slip the ring onto her finger. Unlike some marriage proposals, Prince Harry’s was intimate and low-key. Are you surprised?

There was no fanfare and no large crowd of spectators. We know he took some time to plan this out. Later in the interview, he revealed what inspired the ring’s design. With diamonds from his mother’s jewelry, he was able to weave a part of Princess Diana into their journey.

Another piece came from Botswana, the place where he and Meghan took their first real trip as a couple. Loving and affectionate, Prince Harry charmed his new fiancée with his thoughtfulness.

On a side note, there is a such thing as engagement chicken. It’s a recipe conjured up by chef Ina Garten, and as it turns out Meghan is a fan of her recipes. Funny enough, roasted chicken will forever be a part of their love story.
