The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have recently announced that they will be “taking a step back” from the royal family in pursuit of their own financial freedoms.
As you might imagine, the announcement has garnered quite a bit of chatter, so Prince Harry took it upon himself to give a private speech at a London dinner to give people more insight into the split.
“The U.K. is my home and a place that I love,” he explained in the speech. “That will never change.”
“The decision I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” he continued. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges and I know I haven’t always gotten it right but as far as this goes there really was no other option. What I want to make clear is, we’re not walking away.”
Overall, he wanted the public to know that he and Meghan stepping back is in no way an indication that they don’t want to be part of the royal family anymore. He went on to explain that he had hoped to be able to go on serving the Queen, but that isn’t going to be possible.
“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible,” he explained, adding, “I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”
In addition, he says that nothing is really changing—he is still going to be the man he always was.
“I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me,” he said.
