Prince Philip Will Be Giving Up His Driver’s License Following That January Car Crash

Lately, things have been rather tumultuous with Britain’s Royal Family. For one, it seems as though the most famous Duchess’–Duchess Kate and Duchess Meghan–are having a hard time getting along. We’re hoping that those two will work things out before one sister-in-law is forced to curtsy to the other!

And, to make matter worse, even though she seems to be blissfully married and pregnant with a soon-to-be royal, Duchess Meghan is still grappling with family drama that just won’t seem to end.

That said, controversies aren’t just engulfing the younger generation of the Royal Family–it’s oldest is also having a rough time. Just last month, 97-year-old Prince Philip allegedly caused a car accident while driving near Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

According to Norfolk Police, the accident occurred between the Prince’s Land Rover and a Kia on January 17th, shortly before 3 pm. Although the royal walked away from the crash completely unscathed, the 28-year-old driver of the Kia suffered cuts and the 45-year-old passenger suffered a broken wrist. Apparently, there was also a 9-month-old baby in the car, but luckily the tyke was reported to be safe following the incident.

It’s actually quite miraculous that the injuries were not worse because Prince Philip actually managed to flip over his car during the accident, which occurred while he was pulling out of a driveway.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation; police have reportedly performed breathalyzer tests on both parties (the Prince and the unnamed driver passed, by the way!), but we have yet to hear back any specifics as to who may have been at fault. Even so, it’s safe to say that Prince Philip has pretty much admitted fault already…

You see, Norfolk Police recently reported that the royal has voluntarily surrendered his driver’s license to officers. In a statement to BuzzFeed News, a spokesperson with Buckingham Palace corroborated the report.

“After careful consideration The Duke of Edinburgh has taken the decision to voluntarily surrender his driving licence,” the spokesperson said.

What makes this incident worse is the fact that, just 48 hours after the accident occurred, the Prince was photographed back on the road–but the kicker is that, this time, he wasn’t wearing a seat belt! Something tells us that the Queen would be none to happy to learn about her husband’s dangerous roadside antics.

And, while we’re all for senior citizen empowerment, we are also quite happy to hear that Prince Philip has decided to hang up his driving gloves. After all, we’re sure the guy won’t have any trouble catching a ride when he needs one. No Uber X for the Prince!
