If you’re a child of the ’90s, you probably fondly remember the hit TV show “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” which aired from 1993 through 1996. One of the Power Rangers, Green Ranger Tommy Oliver, was played by actor Jason David Frank. Throughout the years, he reprised the role in other Power Rangers movies and TV shows such as “Power Rangers Megaforce,” “Power Rangers HyperForce” and  the “Power Rangers” movie in 2017.

Unfortunately, Jason has died at the age of 49. TMZ broke the news of his death, originally reporting that he died by suicide in Texas, but later adding context.

Jason and his wife, Tammie, were both staying at a hotel in Texas. They were in the midst of a divorce, so they were staying in separate rooms but at the same hotel. During the stay, Tammie and Jason were both arguing in her hotel room, and the argument was so intense that hotel staff had to come to the room and diffuse the situation. Later, the couple got into another argument.

This time, Jason locked Tammie out of his room. This happened either Friday night or Saturday morning. Tammie was concerned for Jason’s safety, so she called the police on Saturday morning around 5am. When Jason wouldn’t respond to the officers, the hotel management unlocked the door. That’s when they discovered that Jason had hung himself in the bathroom.

A representative for Jason confirmed the sad news to PEOPLE saying, “Unfortunately, it is true. Please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being. He loved his family, friends and fans very much. He will be truly missed.”

Upon hearing the news of Jason’s death, another one of the original Power Rangers cast, Walter E. Jones, posted a tribute to Jason on social media. He wrote, “Can’t believe it…. RIP Jason David Frank.”
