Woman Who Bought a Ring for $9 Finds Out That It’s Worth Close to 1 Million Dollars

A stroke of luck changed one UK woman’s life – 33 years later. 55-year-old Debra Goddard bought a ring at a boot sale (similar to a garage sale) for just £10 and stowed it away in a jewelry box for decades.

It looked like a pretty glass bauble, so Goddard thought nothing of it. When an unkind family member swindled her mother out of her money, Goddard went digging into her own belongings trying to find items to pawn. She took the ring to a jeweler and got a huge shock: the jewel was actually a 26.27 carat diamond!

Stunned, she took it home and thought about what to do. Goddard ended up taking the diamond ring to Sotheby’s Auction House, where its value was verified at £740,000 ($965.589 USD). The proceeds from the sale are going towards taking care of her mom and setting up a firm that scouts out boot sales.

Goddard, who notably has taken in 20 foster children and volunteers a non-profit youth organization, has written a book about finding treasures and wants to share the profits with the group. For now, she is showering her mom with special treatment with her newfound fortune.

Have you ever had luck this woman’s? What do you think of this story? Did you discover you owned something of high worth but didn’t know it?
