Man Rehabs Baby Flying Squirrel, Gains a Lifelong Friend

One day, in St. Petersburg, FL, Jeff Longo found a baby flying squirrel on the sidewalk. He said it was about the size of his pinky finger. Based on its location and situation, Jeff was certain that it was going to die if left unattended. So Jeff took it upon himself to see if he could keep the little thing going.

Jeff searched for and consumed information about how to nurse animals such as this cute little one back to life. He made sure the baby flying squirrel was kept warm, even putting her in his pocket when at work, reminding us of the George Costanza squirrel rehab Seinfeld episode.

After much TLC, the little baby squirrel turned into a healthy adult flying squirrel. As someone who didn’t know much about caring for animals, he did a great job caring for what he eventually started calling Biscuits.

Jeff still cares for her today. You might think this is cruel, but Jeff once again shows his big heart and thoughtful approach to caring for the animal, as he fears she’s not like other flying squirrels. You see, as Jeff notes, Biscuits does not fear humans or other animals since she grew up around them. Releasing her into the wild is sure to result in injury or worse. So Jeff keeps her in a cage and makes sure she has what she needs.

Jeff started a gofundme campaign “in order to get her a bigger, better house with more room to jump and fly and fill it with all the toys” he can. And while he hopes to be able to spoil her this way, he notes that Biscuits is comfortable now and that there is no harm in her remaining in her current environment.
