National mac and cheese day is coming up on July 14. We love mac and cheese, and it definitely sounds like a great excuse to enjoy a batch of creamy, cheesy goodness.

Making a box of Kraft mac and cheese is definitely one of the most popular ways to enjoy the warm comfort food, but Kraft is hoping fans of their mac and cheese will try something a little bit different this month.

Kraft knows that besides mac and cheese, another very popular comfort food is ice-cream, so the brand decided to team up with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream to create Kraft mac and cheese flavored ice-cream.

We know savory ice-cream sounds a little odd. We can’t even quite imagine what mac and cheese flavored ice-cream would taste like. Obviously there won’t be actual noodles in the ice-cream. Do we even want an ice-cream flavor that tastes like cheese? Kraft and Van Leeuwen hope we do.

In a press release, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Sr. Associate Brand Manager Emily Violett explained, “We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with.”

Violett went on to explain that Kraft chose Van Leeuwen to bring their ice-cream idea to life because the company’s ice-cream is “made with high quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”

The limited edition ice-cream flavor goes on sale nationwide at Van Leeuwen stores on July 14 at 11am. A pint of the mac and cheese ice-cream costs $12 but anyone in New York on July 14th can taste it for free. There will be an ice-cream truck in Union Square giving out free samples from 11am until 6pm.

While this is the first time that Kraft has created an ice-cream flavor, it is not the first time that they have experimented with traditional mac and cheese. They sold boxes of pink mac and cheese for Valentine’s Day, and pink wasn’t just a color. The packet of pink flavoring tasted like candy. Before that, they sold very limited edition pumpkin spice mac and cheese. It was so limited edition that you had to win a contest to even try it.
