Kia and Hyundai Recall Thousands of Vehicles Due to Increased Fire Risk

Kia owners in the U.S. are being alerted to a new voluntary recall by the car maker. Hyundai Motor Group, which also has an ownership stake in Kia, announced the news that affects 168,000 vehicles for both brands.

The reason for the recall? Engine fire risk due to a high-pressure fuel pipe. Back in 2017, these cars were recalled to repair the problem but consumers are still encountering fuel leak issues, which can result in fires. Over 100 complaint reports exist in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s database about vehicle fires for Kia. No injuries have been reported.

Kia believes the repairs were done improperly and seeks to rectify the problem. Although no reports have come in for Hyundai, the automaker has added 100,000 vehicles to Kia’s 68,000 out of abundance of caution. Here are the various models affected:

2011 – 2014 Kia Optima, Sorento, Sportage

2013 – 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

2011 – 2014 Hyundai Sonata

You will have to verify whether your make and model are a part of the recall by visiting the Kia and Hyundai websites. Not every vehicle is on the list.

In addition to this recall, 3.7 million vehicles are also part of the campaign so that both manufacturers can install a software update. Its purpose is to alert drivers of a potential engine failure problem and trigger a reduction in speed.
