The world has known her as Kelly Clarkson ever since the won the singing competition “American Idol.” Since that show, she has truly become a star conquering both the world of music and television with a show named after her, “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Even though the world knows her as Kelly Clarkson, is that really her name? The star recently filed to have her name legally changed to Kelly Brianne. Brianne is her middle name. Is it now her new stage name? Is her show going to be called “The Kelly Brianne Show”? That would be hard for a lot of fans to accept.

On the red carpet before the premiere of another show Kelly co-hosts, “American Song Contest,” she and co-host Snoop Dogg answered a few questions from PEOPLE correspondent Adrianna Costa. One of the questions was about her name change. She asked, “Are you Kelly Brianne now in the credits?”

Kelly seemed a little surprised by the question and eager to set the record straight. She said, “No, no, no, no, no.” Then she explained the truth about why she really changed her name. She said, laughing, “I just got divorced so they dropped – I had to drop my married last name.”

She went on to add, “I just kept my middle name for my personal life.” So, it does sound like legally Kelly is Kelly Brianne and not Kelly Brianne Clarkson, as she once was, but she doesn’t expect any of her fans to stop calling her Kelly Clarkson.

Kelly added, “No, I’m still Kelly Clarkson.”

Just to clarify, the reporter asked one more time, “Oh, you’re still Kelly Clarkson?”

Kelly responded by saying what a lot of people have been thinking. She replied, “I don’t think I can change Clarkson at this point. I’m 20 years in.”

So, the short answer is that after divorcing her ex, Brandon Blackstock, she wanted to drop Blackstock from her name. That’s reasonable. However, it also does sound like legally she did not add Clarkson back to her name. She is legally Kelly Brianne, but she has no problem going by Kelly Clarkson.
