John Mulaney’s Ex-Wife Opens Up About the Couple’s “Surreal And Shocking” Divorce
Comedian John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler got married in 2014. For years the public didn’t know much about Tendler except that she was Mulaney’s wife and the fact that the couple was public about their joint decision not to have children. In fact, Mulaney was very clear that he didn’t want children.
In June 2020, during the pandemic, Mulaney and Tendler bought a house in Connecticut together, but they never ended up living there together. In 2021, Mulaney and Tendler announced that they would be getting divorced. In Tendler’s statement, she explained, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage.” She added, “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
The divorce announcement came after Mulaney completed two months in rehab due to cocaine and alcohol abuse.
Mulaney appeared as a guest on “Late Night with Seth Myers” in September 2021. He told Myers that he left rehab in October 2020, visited Los Angeles in the Spring of 2021 and met Olivia Munn. He said, “Then, in the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia. I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together.”
That’s right; the man who said he didn’t want kids got Munn pregnant and now seems happy about becoming a father. Not only did this surprise Mulaney’s fans, but it was also a shock to his ex-wife.
There was a time when Tendler considered the idea of having children an impossibility due to Mulaney’s desire not to have children. She told Harpers Bazaar that she considered her relationship a priority over having children. She explained, “There were things I never even thought about before because that was just a closed door. So now that it feels like not as much of a closed door, it’s something that I ruminate on a lot.” Tendler, who is 36, plans to freeze her eggs.
Tendler has moved on from Mulaney by going viral on TikTok and decorating her home in Connecticut that she shares with Petunia, the French Bull Dog that used to belong to both her and Mulaney.
Tendler explained, “Everything that has transpired has been totally shocking and I think surreal.” In speaking about the divorce, she added, “In a way, I feel like, well, it can only go up from here, because I reached the depth of where I could go.”
Since the divorce, Tendler has gotten her masters in costume studies at NYU. She has also completed a series of photos titled “Rooms in the First House.” She sold the photos at a Brooklyn art fair, some going for as much as mid-six figures.
Even though Tendler has made a name for herself with her art and her talent, she is still cautiously optimistic about her career. She explained, “I am in a place where I am able to make money from my art, which is amazing and is great but is also terrifying because I have a very strong inner critic, which is constantly reminding me that this could and will disappear if you don’t continue to make new work.”
