On September 2nd, 2022, actress and activist Jane Fonda took to Instagram to announce that she has been diagnosed with a type of cancer called Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She explained that despite the diagnosis, she feels “lucky” because “This is a very treatable cancer. 80% of people survive.”

Fonda has already started chemotherapy treatments which are expected to last for 6 months. She feels optimistic and plans to learn from the experience battling cancer.

This is not the first time that Fonda has battled cancer. Previously, she battled breast cancer in 2010, and she also had a cancerous spot removed from her lip in 2018.

According to The Mayo Clinic, old age, infections, exposure to certain chemicals and taking certain medications are all risk factors in developing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the 7th most common type of cancer in adults in the United States. Symptoms include chest pain, trouble breathing, swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, night sweats, weight loss and swelling of the abdomen. It’s important to see a doctor when experiencing these symptoms to the point where they cause worry.

This particular type of cancer starts in the lymphatic system which is part of the immune system. The Mayo Clinic explained, “In non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form growths (tumors) throughout the body.”

After hearing about Fonda’s cancer diagnosis, multiple celebrities reacted to her news by commenting on her post and sending her words of encouragement. For example, Chelsea Handler wrote, “Love you, Jane. Thinking of you, always.”

Actress Andie MacDowell wrote, “Beloved we love you!!!”

Reese Witherspoon commented, “Sending you all my strength! Love you Jane.”

Diane Keaton wrote, “We love you, Jane. You are my hero. You are a warrior. All of my life I have been in awe of all that you do. I will continue to admire the crusader you have always been and always will be.”

Alyssa Milano added, “Wishing you more strength than you need and more love than you can bear. Call me if you need anything. Always here. Always.”

Model Naomi Campbell shared, “GRACEFUL QUEEN. @janefonda thank you, even at this difficult time you are sharing with [us]. It’s so important to have a positive mindset!! And you do, GOD BLESS!! My thoughts and prayers are with you.”
