Jamie Lynn Spears Breaks Her Silence On Her Family’s Complicated Dynamics in New Memoir

When you hear the name “Jamie Lynn Spears,” you probably automatically think in your head, “Oh, that’s Britney Spears’ little sister.” That’s always how she’s been portrayed throughout her life.

But now, at 30 years old, Jamie Lynn is breaking her silence on her complicated family include, including her relationship with her pop star sister. She has just released a memoir called “Things I Should Have Said,” out January 18, and there are some eye-opening anecdotes in it.

Jamie Lynn sat with ABC News’ Juju Chang for a TV interview about the book, and when asked why she wrote it, she said: “It was really important to me to, first off, honor my voice. I have to do it or how else can I expect my daughters to stand up for themselves?” She’s referring to her two daughters, 13-year-old Maddie and 3-year-old Ivey.

One of the main things she dives into in her memoir is her relationship with Britney, who is 10 years older than her. We all know Britney has gone through a lot over the years, but no one experienced it so firsthand as Jamie Lynn did.

She explained in her book how she noticed Britney’s behavior changing, calling her out as “erratic,” “paranoid” and “spiraling.” When asked how Britney’s mental state is now, she said she “can’t really speak to anyone else’s state of mind.”

“I don’t think that’s fair,” she said. “But I’m allowed to say how I felt in those [moments], because that matters. It matters that I was in pain.”

She also talked about Britney’s conservatorship, which began in 2008 and ended in November of 2021. “I was happy. I was,” Jamie Lynn said about the eventual ending. “When it was put into place I was 17 years old. I was about to have a baby, so I didn’t understand what was happening. Nor was I focused on that. I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”

Their relationship remained complicated over the years, and recently, Britney even unfollowed Jamie Lynn on Instagram. But even so, Jamie Lynn says that she’ll always love and support her older sister.

“That love is still there. 100 percent. I love my sister,” she said. “I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her, and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”
