Alanis Morissette Teamed Up With James Corden to Perform an Updated Version of ‘Ironic’ for Today’s Problems
These days, there are plenty of amazing late night shows to watch. Personally speaking, we find ourselves tuning into Jimmy Fallon’s show most often, but that doesn’t mean that we’re totally brand loyal. As a matter of fact, lately, we’ve really been getting into James Corden’s show, so much so that we routinely find ourselves spending way too much time on YouTube, catching up on the funny man’s most hilarious clips.
Just the other day, during one of these coveted procrastination sessions, we came across a clip from late 2015 that, somehow, is just as relevant today as it was nearly half a decade ago.
It stars Corden and a very special guest, the ‘Queen of ’90s Rock’ herself, Alanis Morissette. In it, the two wear matching garb from the rocker’s 1995 music video for “Ironic”–red beanie and braids and all! Amazingly, Morissette looks like she hasn’t aged a day. In fact, while she sings along to the classic tune with the talk show host, you would think she is just revisiting the song, but when you pay closer attention to the updated lyrics, you might notice something a bit different…
An old friend sends you a Facebook request
You only find out they’re racist after you accept
There’s free office cake on the first day of your diet
It’s like they announce a new iPhone the day after you buy it
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
It’s like swiping left on your future soulmate
It’s a Snapchat that you wish you had saved
It’s a funny tweet that nobody faves
And who would’ve thought it figures
It’s a traffic jam when you try to use Waze
A no-smoking sign when you brought your vape
It’s 10,000 male late-night hosts when all you want is just one woman, seriously!
It’s singing the duet of your dreams, and then Alanis Morissette shouting at you
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think
It’s like you’re first class on a Southwest plane
Then you realize that every seat is the same
It’s like Amazon but your package never came
And who would’ve thought it figures
It’s like Netflix but you own DVDs
It’s a free ride but your Uber’s down the street
It’s singing “Ironic,” but there are no ironies
And who would’ve thought it figures
That’s right, Morissette and Corden found a way to brilliantly update the song to better fit into the 21st-century. Looking at the lyrics, it’s amazing to think that so many of the things listed weren’t even in existence in 1995. Back then, there was no Netflix, no Facebook, no Waze, and definitely no vaping!
The updated tune shows how far we’ve come–though, we must admit that we do miss the simpler days of the ’90s…
