Ice Dancers Who Turned Heads with Their Spicy ‘Moulin Rouge’ Routine Share ‘Unique’ Relationship
This past week saw ice dancing duo Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue win two gold medals at the Winter Olympics. Canada’s sweethearts are being celebrated as the most decorated figure skating team with five gold medals under their belts.
Many people are talking about how their appearance at this year’s games was probably their last, with their first Olympic run being in 2010. After winning silver at 2014’s Olympic Games in Sochi, Moir and Virtue were said to be retiring.
Clearly, that wasn’t the case. But it’s not just their talent and historic record that have people talking about these two – it’s their chemistry. If it was scientifically possible for fire to blaze on ice, Tessa and Scott would be the example. At least it’s possible metaphorically.
Why? Their winning free skate routine to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack was nothing short of steamy and romantic. As it’s rumored to be their last Olympic ice dancing performance, they gave more than their all. Besides impressing the judges, their ice dance has only added fuel to the speculative fire that they are more than on-ice partners.
Moir and Virtue have known each other since they were little kids, having been paired up to skate together in 1997. That’s over twenty years of partnership! You can do the math on how many hours have gone into their training over the years. To many, their pairing seems more like a romantic relationship.
For years, they’ve countered rumors about them being a couple who are madly in love. Judging by their in-sync, dreamy performances, you can see how someone could arrive at that conclusion. However, it’s also entirely possible that they are platonic friends.
When asked by CNN about their on-ice chemistry, Moir attributed it to them knowing each other for so long. He also stated that their relationship is unique and there really isn’t a way to describe it.
One of the things that figure skating fans point out is that much of the sport’s draw is because of the storytelling that takes place on ice. When we see twosomes like Moir and Virtue glide over ice to music, it doesn’t always feel like formulaic choreography.
People can feel the um,. . . tension. As with TV shows, it can be hard for fans to remember these are just performances. They see emotion, they see a connection, and they see sparks flying. In addition to the athleticism and technique, skaters pour their souls into creating storylines for the audiences. It’s almost like acting.
With the history that these two share, it’s easy to see how their talent and passion compels people to tune into the Olympics. If you haven’t watched any of their routines, try it and see if you don’t jump onto the will-they or won’t-they bandwagon.
