Hulu Drops to Just $5.99 Per Month As Netflix Announces New Price Hikes

While more and more people cut ties with cable, online video streaming services like Netflix continue to grow in popularity. Although Netflix keeps raising its prices (the post popular subscription plan is now $13/month), they still have 58 million customers in the U.S.

If you’re not on the Netflix bandwagon but want to give a streaming service a try, you might want to try Hulu. The company is slashing their prices from $7.99 per month to just $5.99 per month. This is for the streaming service that includes ads, but watching a couple ads is a small price to pay for such a low monthly fee.

Most other Hulu plans will remain the same price that is currently offered. The no-commercials plan will still be $11.99 per month, and the Hulu/Spotify combination subscription that’s available through Spotify will remain $12.99 per month.

While there aren’t nearly as many Hulu subscribers as Netflix subscribers, Hulu made a huge jump forward in 2018. At the end of 2018, Hulu increased its number of subscribers by 48% with a total of 25 million subscribers.

On Hulu, you can enjoy shows like “Seinfeld” and “Lost” which are not available on Netflix. Although, if you have kids, you might want a Netflix subscription once they release the new “Baby Shark” cartoon (or not).

While many people turn to Netflix to binge watch original series or their favorite classic TV shows, Hulu is unique in that they also offer a plan where you can watch live TV. Hulu is raising the price of their plan that includes live TV from $39.99 to $44.99. Although the price for the service is going up, the price for upgrades like the enhanced DVR and multiscreen viewing is going down from $14.99 to $9.99, so you can pretty much call it a wash.

Once the Disney deal to buy Fox officially closes, Disney will be a majority shareholder owning 60% of Hulu. Disney is planning its own streaming service, Disney+, but the company still views Hulu as an important place for their content. Although Disney+ isn’t here yet, we can assume that much of the content their will be aimed at kids, but time will only tell how everything shakes out once the Fox deal goes through and Disney+ is available.

For now, the Hulu prices are a good bargain. These new prices will take effect on February 26th, and current customers can expect to see the price difference on their next billing statement after that date.
