Vaccines. Many people are for them. Some people are against them. Then there’s the COVID-19 vaccine, and that’s a whole other subject. Even some people who don’t consider themselves anti-vaxxers are adamantly determined not to get vaccinated. We’re not just talking about people who may not be up on the latest health news. We’re talking about nurses and health care workers who claim they don’t feel safe taking this vaccine.

Many companies and businesses are encouraging employees to get vaccinated. They use tactics like paid time off or a bonus for getting vaccinated. Some states are even offering contests that you can only enter if you have been vaccinated. While these incentives work for some people, they don’t work for everyone.

In Houston, Texas, one hospital is on a mission to have 100% of its staff fully vaccinated for COVID-19. They’re almost there. Currently, 99% of the people who work at Houston Methodist Hospital are fully vaccinated. Instead of making an exception for the few employees who don’t feel comfortable taking the vaccine, the hospital has decided to fire them.

TODAY talked to four nurses who lost their jobs at Houston Methodist Hospital simply because they refused to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Watch the video below to hear why they don’t want to get vaccinated and why they believe it’s unfair that they lost their jobs over a personal health decision.

The four nurses interviewed by TODAY are far from the only ones who are unhappy about the vaccine mandate at Houston Methodist. There are 117 employees who have joined together to file a lawsuit against the hospital. The lawsuit states that the hospital is “illegally requiring its employees to be injected with an experimental vaccine as a condition of employment.” The lawsuit explains that the vaccines are authorized for emergency use, but they have not been fully approved by the FDA.

In a statement, Houston Methodist President and CEO Marc Boom, MD, explained the hospital’s stance. “It is legal for healthcare institutions to mandate vaccines, as we have done with the flu vaccine since 2009. The COVID-19 vaccines have proven through rigorous trials to be very safe and very effective and are not experimental. More than 165 million people in the U.S. alone have received vaccines against COVID-19, and this has resulted in the lowest numbers of infections in our country and in the Houston region in more than a year. We proudly stand by our employees and our mission to protect our patients.”
