Goldie Hawn Reveals How Her Fame Was Actually ‘A Happy Accident’

Goldie Hawn has been winning over audiences throughout her career in acting. From hits like First Wives Club to Overboard, Housesitter, and many others, the Academy Award winner sure has an impressive line of films under her belt. But some might be surprised to know that her fame was nothing more than a “happy accident”—at least, according to Goldie herself.

She recently sat down with Willie Geist to take a look back at her Hollywood career. At 76 years old, she admitted that she didn’t ever want to be an actress.

“I didn’t want to be a movie star, first of all,” she says in the interview. “I just felt people in LA, in the movie industry that they we all…messed up. I didn’t want to be like that. I was a happy person.”

Goldie began her fame as a dancer. Her mother owned a dance studio, and Goldie had been dancing since she was three years old. She was so successful, in fact, that all of her dancing gigs eventually led her land her first role on the 1960s TV hit Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in.

It sounds like a lovely, gradual career move, right? Well, Goldie didn’t actually respond all to well to the fame.

“I started getting anxious and then I started getting panic attacks,” she said. “I was so scared about what was going on with me that I saw a doctor. I wanted to get happy again! My intention was not to live this way.”

Goldie wound up seeing a doctor for eight years, which helped her continue her career into not only acting but producing films. However, she eventually took a long acting hiatus—an entire 15-year break—to pursue her new purpose of helping children with mental health and fitness through her company “Mind Up,” which she founded in 2003.

“I wanted to create something that children can access in teachers all over the world because we need to build a kinder world that actually has greater capacity for critical thinking,” she said. “There’s no time like now to have a solution. “

Goldie continues to discuss her company and all the children she’s reached and how much of a difference she feels like it’s made. She also dives into what made her go back to acting after more than a decade off, and just how she’s feeling about her career these days.
