Ever put on a pair of jeans with front pockets, only to try to put something in one of those said pockets and realize that they’re sewed shut?

After the realization, you might throw your money, keys and Chapstick into your purse and murmur something about what the heck the point of fake pockets is, but then go about your day.

How come no one has ever discussed this before? Think about it—what’s the point of a pocket that isn’t functional?

We wondered this ourselves, so we turned to the troughs of the Internet and there isn’t a ton of information as to why this is. It seems that fake pockets act as mere decoration, and nothing else. The one decent answer we came across is that you’ll more so see fake pockets on skinny jeans in order to keep the silhouette as slimming as possible—but, still, not a great reason!

It turns out we’re not the only ones against fake pockets on jeans. One 7-year-old named Kamryn Gardner used her first-grade school project, which was on using persuasion in letters, to write to Old Navy requesting them to add in real front pockets into her jeans. “Dear Old Navy,” she wrote in a letter. “I do not like that the front pockets of the girls jeans are fake. I want front pockets because I want to put my hands in them. I also would like to put things in them. Would you consider making girls jeans with front pockets that are not fake. Thank you for reading my request.”

A very reasonable request—and Old Navy thought so too. Obviously, the teacher had to send this along to the company. And though no one was really expecting a response, Old Navy came through. “Thank you so much for taking the time to write us about pockets on girl’s jeans,” the retailer wrote back to Kamryn. “The Old Navy kids product team appreciate your information. It’s great feedback for us as we develop new product.”

While she waits for them to develop real-pocket jeans, Old Navy sent her four pairs of jeans and jean shorts—all that included real pockets.

Bravo, Old Navy! And bravo, Kamryn. We’re sure you got a good grade on that project.
