We all know what a baby shower is, right? It’s a party where the new mom, and sometimes the new dad as well, are showered with gifts and love for their new baby usually a few weeks before the baby is born.

While baby showers are especially common before a couple’s first baby is born, they are not as common for additional babies; however, sometimes couples choose to have a different type of party.

Back in 2008, Jenna Karvunidis invented the gender reveal party. She thought it would be fun for her family and friends to discover her baby’s gender at the same time she did. She revealed the gender by cutting into a cake, and surprise, there was pink frosting inside. It was a girl!

While many gender reveal parties use gimmicks like cutting into a cake or releasing balloons to reveal the baby’s gender, some people have taken the pink or blue reveal a little bit too far.

Okay, they’ve taken it way too far. We’re talking pyrotechnics that are responsible for a major wild fire in California.

Karvunidis took to Facebook to post her disdain for these out of control gender reveal parties. She wrote, “ Stop it. Stop having these stupid parties. For the love of God, stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid’s penis. No one cares but you.”

She continued, “Excuse me for having a cake for my family in 2008. Just because I’m the gEnDeR rEvEaL iNVeNtoR doesn’t mean I think people should burn down their communities.”

One person commented, “If an expectant couple want to tell friends about their impending baby’s gender, why not just send out a fun email. No one should be holding parties at this time — NO ONE.”

Other people are leaving comments on her post urging her not to feel guilty about the fire since her gender reveal idea was quite different. “Thank you for speaking out. I certainly don’t blame you for this and I would hope others don’t either. You did not go out and set off a smoke bomb in a park with dry brush around during a heatwave.”

Another comment reads, “I totally agree. Apparently a simple cake or cupcake isn’t enough anymore and everything has to be done to the nth degree. There’s no comparison in how the gender reveal started and what it’s morphed into. “
