Franken Brownies

Growing up I was always a fan of the classic horror movies. The ones with Bela Lugosi as Dracula and Boris Karloff as Frankenstein were my favorites. There is just something about Frankenstein’s Monster that is so perfectly fitting for Halloween. These adorable brownies are an unexpected treat to break out this holiday season. Guaranteed to make your guests smile these guys are much easier to make than an actual monster, and you only need enough electricity to run your microwave and oven, not raise the dead.

All you need:

Brownies, baked from your favorite recipe or box mix

1 cup White Frosting, try our easy recipe!

Large Marshmallows, 1 per Brownie

Green and Yellow Food coloring

Melt the frosting by placing it in the microwave for 15 seconds and stirring it. If it is not melted keep cooking at 15 second intervals. Careful not to overcook, you want melted not molten. I found that a mixture of 5 drops green and 1 drop yellow dye created the perfect Frankenstein’s Monster green. Add the dye to the melted frosting and mix.

Dip the marshmallows in the colored, melted frosting using a fork. Make sure to tap off as much excess frosting as you can or your monsters will have some serious double chins. If there is still a little extra frosting hanging around you can just cut it off later when they dry.

Let the frosting dry for 5-10 minutes. You want it to no longer be sticky. Sprinkle the tops with sprinkles and gently press them down with your fingers to cause them to stick. Using either a gel frosting pen or a tooth pick and some melted chocolate draw faces and stitches on your monsters. The stitches really make ’em these little guys come alive. Get it? I’ll see myself out now.

I happened to have some silver nonpareils laying around so I stuck a couple of them in the bottom of the marshmallows to make those signature bolts.

Cut the brownies into rectangles. While the frosting was still melted I used a toothpick and painted stitches on the brownies.

Stand the brownies up so that they are nice and tall. Use a dollop of the left over frosting to attach the heads.
