Fed Up Grandma Slowing Down Speeding Drivers With Her ‘Radar Gun’ Is the Hero We All Need

Ever raise an eyebrow at a car speeding past you going way too fast? That’s about all most of us do in that situation—well, unless you’re a police officer and are able to pull the speeder over and give them a ticket.

However, one woman named Patti Baumgartner decided she had enough of speeders and wanted to change the game on trying to trap them their tracks—literally. The grandmother was not about to tolerate people with hefty road rage near her hometown in Montana, especially with her little grandchildren running around. Plus, just because you have to get somewhere quickly doesn’t mean you’re allowed to break the rules! C’mon now.

Though not a cop, Patti couldn’t help but to take reckless driving into her own hands. She decided to plop herself down along the road she witnessed speeding most, along with her weapon of choice—the item that was about to finally tame these speed demons once and for all…

…A hairdryer.

Yep, that thing you dry your hair with. Sure, a hairdryer isn’t quite what most people would’ve thought would get people speeding by under control. After all, why would anyone stop at the sight of a woman holding a hair styling tool?

But that’s just it—Patti realized something a lot of other people might not have. Just because a hairdryer can’t technically catch or record people for speeding, the shape of the dryer looked similar enough to that of a speeding gun to confuse drivers.

What we’re saying is…her plan worked! Every time Patti would point her hairdryer at a speeding car, low and behold, they actually stepped on the brakes! The second they saw someone pointing something at them—even though it wasn’t something that could actually do anything in any way, their mind played tricks on them and they stopped speeding. Mission complete.

“I thought it was hilarious, I think that we have a speed issue in Montana and I thought it was a great creative idea for the public to try and combat that a little bit without making people too upset,” said Montana Highway Patrol trooper Noah Pesola.

One by one, Patti continued to point her hairdryer at speeding cars, and one by on, they slowed down. It really started to make a difference in town! So much so that the local police station thanked her for her efforts to keep the area safe. They even made her an “honorary trooper.”

“It’s not an official or anything like that for the honorary trooper, which is kind of what I called it,” said Pesola. “I didn’t know what else to do for her, when she’s doing something for the community, and like she says, she’s got grandkids in the area so she’s doing something for her grandkids’ benefits. The best thing I could think of was give her a trooper hat and a badge to make her look a little more official.”

Patti’s work isn’t done—she says she’s going to keep on trying to get speeders to slow down with her hair dryer technique.

How adorable is Patti and her speed trap? Would you ever think to do something like this?
