Can You Spot the Empty Mug Among All of the Full Mugs?

There’s nothing like cozying up with a warm beverage during the wintertime. Whether it’s a mug of tea, coffee or anything else that warms your soul, it’s the best time of year for a warm cup of cheer.

Illustrator Gergely Dudás, aka Dudlof, is all about discovering the best parts of the seasons. His specialty is creating hide and seek puzzles displaying all sorts of scenes. In fact, a lot of his work revolves around creating images that match the seasons. For example, last winter, he stumped us with this wintry snowman puzzle and in the summer, he asked us to find the butterfly among the sunflowers. Sometimes, he incorporates holidays, like hiding a Santa Claus among a festive optical illusion, and during Halloween, finding a polar bear among a sea of ghosts.

But this winter, he created possibly our favorite puzzle of all: One filled with mugs of warm drinks. In the photo, some mugs have hot cocoa with marshmallows, some have coffee, some have green tea, some are topped with whipped cream—the list goes on and on. It’s all the best wintry beverages in one colorful image.

The colors of the mugs he chose all mesh well together—reds, pinks, greens, yellows, oranges, browns…even just the colors make you feel warm and fuzzy simply looking at the photo. To top it off, there are a few furry friends enjoying their beverage of choice with each other. A bunny, fox, and bear all look happy as can be sipping away on their drinks.

Though it’s a happy and cheery picture, let’s not forget the purpose of it: To find the illusion, which is to locate the mug that’s empty.

At first glance, it seems impossible to find a mug with nothing in it. All of the mugs appear to have some kind of drink in them, and it’s easy to get lost in the cozy ambiance of the photo. But once you spot the empty mug, you can’t un-see it. It’s there, plain as can be, even if it’s not obvious at first!
