Yesterday, Elon Musk took to Twitter with an absolutely ridiculous little quip about buying up the massive soda company Coca-Cola, so that he could “put the cocaine back in.”

For the record, the joke isn’t that Coca-Cola used to have cocaine in it; that’s actually true! But I imagine that this remark has very little to do with Coca-Cola and a whole heck of a lot more to do with the idea that Twitter had lost its way prior to Musk purchasing it.

In the last few months, Elon Musk had been polling people on his Twitter account, asking about issues of freedom of speech and censorship. This tipped a lot of folks off to the idea that he might be looking into acquiring the social media platform so that he could change the way that it functions. Low and behold, he has done it. He finally made the leap on April 25th 2022 and has officially made an agreement to purchase Twitter for roughly $44 billion.

The fall-out from this purchase is already being seen. The first place we can clearly see the fallout of this decision is in the stock market – Musk’s other company Tesla saw a huge drop in stock value after the announcement, presumably over concerns for how he will fund this enormous purchase.

Additionally, lots of folks have noticed a significant drop in their followers on Twitter, some big name celebrities have tweeted about losing tens of thousands of followers in a very short amount of time. The current working theory is that people aren’t being unfollowed, but rather their followers are leaving Twitter in a great big Elon Exodus.

After seeing the sorts of things that Elon Musk tweets about and following his life, his decisions, and his political leanings, I can definitely see why certain groups of people would want out of that situation as soon as possible. There are plenty of concerns about what his “anti-censorship” vibes really mean and how he will use Twitter to control the narrative in general.

Still, though, there are plenty of people who just don’t care about this news, or think of it as just another acquisition, nothing to concern themselves with.

Personally, I’m more concerned with how much he seems to think he’s a hero for buying Twitter. The joke about buying Coca-Cola is less of a laugh and more of a cringe for me.
