Before we fine-tuned our DIY skills, we, too, felt utterly uninspired — and often, BROKE — when looking around our dated home. That said, with dedication, know-how, and a bit of pocket change, we’ve been able to completely update our house into a home that we now love.

1. Give your bathroom tiles a paint job

   Just because you’re sick of your bathroom floor doesn’t mean that you need to rip up any tile! 2. Make over your kitchen’s backsplash

   Are you a renter who hates your backsplash? Or are you an owner who doesn’t want to plunk down the cash it takes to pay for a new one? If so, stick-on backsplashes are for you! These stylish “tiles” are cheap, won’t damage your walls, and are as easy to install as cupboard contact paper. The best part? You can cover your entire backsplash for well under 50 bucks. 3. Paint “stainless steel” over your existing appliances

   Did you know that 100% stainless steel comes in a liquid form that you can paint over your old appliances? That means you can make your stove, fridge, or dishwasher look like its worth twice the price, all for about 77 bucks. What a steal!

4. Cover up that ugly wire shelving

   Let’s be honest— cheap wire shelving can ruin the look of even the best cupboards. To upgrade yours, simply remove the shelves and line them with thick poster board and the contact paper of your choice. The new look may just inspire you to finally organize your kitchen cabinets!

5. Say goodbye to your dated vertical blinds

   Are you stuck renting an apartment that has ugly, clumsy vertical blinds? We feel you! Luckily, there’s an easy way to rehab your windows without losing your security deposit, by covering up the vinyl blinds with a sophisticated curtain. It won’t cause any damage because the fabric will hang from the existing plastic base. How cool is that?!

6. Craft your very own chic banquette

   There’s nothing more impressive than walking into a home kitchen that has a booth in it. Seriously cool, right? Well, this can be all yours with just a little bit of elbow grease! You can build a bench from entirely repurposed materials and craft your panel from a pegboard. If you have your heart set on making the best breakfast nook ever, this DIY might just save you thousands!

7. Transform your scratched-up coffee table into a marble masterpiece

   Similar to the aforementioned stick-on backsplash, this handy faux-marble contact paper works well to upgrade the look of your room. It’s self-adhesive, waterproof, and best of all, it’s safe to use on most surfaces. A faux-marble table for a fraction of the cost of the real thing? Yes, please!

8. Let your kiddos reclaim some precious bedroom space

   If your kids share a room, then you know just how much space beds—even twin beds— take up! So, instead of shoving two beds into one small room, upgrade the space by building a fully-retractable trundle using ultra-inexpensive pallets. Trust us, your kids will thank you for the extra play space they’ll gain!

9. Finish it all off by giving your windows a makeover

   Professional window treatments can be pricey and time-consuming, which is why we love the idea of slapping this decorative film onto your boring windows. Like contact paper, it won’t damage the window’s surface and, as a bonus, it comes in a variety of stylish designs. Talk about a head-turning upgrade!
