Unfortunately, we live in a world where every single one of us can fall victim to a home invasion. Even if you have installed a pricey security system in your house, you can never be too sure that a crafty burglar won’t find their way in and take your prized possessions.

Though store-bought safes can do a good job of locking up your chosen items, most aren’t all that inconspicuous. That’s why, today, we are going to show you several hacks that will help you make your very own DIY safes. The best part about these is that most criminals will be none the wiser, as your valuables will be hidden in plain sight.

Here are a couple of our favorite and most convincing DIY safes from the geniuses at Household Hacker.

1. Book Safe

   Sure, you can purchase lock box book safes in stores, but as the host in the video mentions, they tend to look rather obvious.

   To make a much better decoy, find a large hardcover book and turn to page 20. Clamp both the left and right sides and start carving out around 5 to 10 pages at a time with a precision knife. Once you have gotten to a place that is deep enough to fit your objects, place a plastic container (a pencil box works well) in the etched out hole and glue inside.

   Carefully put all of your valuables in the box, then close the book and spread a clear coat of glue on the outside pages. It will then be ready to place back on your bookshelf. No robber is going to ever suspect it!

2. Plastic Bottle Safe

   An object that resembles an ordinary piece of recycling is actually one of the best places to hide your most beloved possessions.

   To get started on making your very own, you must first locate a plastic bottle with a large label and a small glass jar with a similar diameter as the bottle (a baby food jar should suffice). Once you have your materials, empty the liquid out of the water bottle and peel back the label. If it’s too tacky, a hair dryer should help melt some of the glue.

   Using a precision knife, make a cut through the center of the bottle and add about an inch of water to the bottom. Next, add a halo of hot glue along the sides of the jar and slide into your bottle, making sure that it rests just above the water line.

   Once complete, perform the same steps with the upper portion, ensuring that you add the glue to the outside diameter of the jar topper. Screw both ends together, then re-attach the label with some glue. Throw in your fridge, freezer, or pantry. Genius!
