Texas Couple With Immunocompromised Infant Get Kicked Out of Restaurant for Wearing Masks
As we still navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, many restaurants across the world still require or recommend wearing a mask, whether you’re vaccinated or not. But rarely do you find a restaurant that requires you NOT to wear one.
Little did Natalie Wester and her husband Jose Lopez-Guerrero know that their date night was about to be turned upside down by an odd request to sacrifice their health—and the health of their baby.
You see, the Texas couple, had their son in the middle of the pandemic, so, as you might imagine, they haven’t been able to get out much. Finally, when their son turned four months old, they were so excited to be able to sneak away to rekindle their relationship.
“We are new parents and in the middle of a pandemic, we don’t really get out a whole lot,” Wester told CNN. “But that Friday night, my mom happened to be available to watch our son. … Living in a pandemic, being isolated and away from others is a big deal for our mental and social health.”
However, their son has cystic fibrosis, making him immunocompromised. They didn’t want to take any chances, so they decided to wear masks to the restaurant. They wanted to make sure they didn’t risk bringing home the virus, which could make their infant very sick.
However, the restaurant they chose—Hang Time Sports Grill & Bar—has a strict NO mask policy.
“About 30 minutes in, our waitress comes over and she sits down next to me and she’s like, ‘Hey, so our manager is over there in the kitchen, and he is not as nice as I am so I came over here to talk to you and unfortunately, this is a political thing, but our manager does not believe in the mask. He’s tired of being told what to do by, you know, politics in the country, and so you’re going to need to take the mask off,” Wester said.
The two were shocked. When they had walked in, the hostess told them to remove the masks, but she thought that was to check their IDs. They had no idea they weren’t allowed to wear them at all.
“Upon us walking in the restaurant, there was a band playing, and it was really loud,” she said. “And the hostess, she had asked for our IDs and she did mention something about removing our masks, but I honestly just thought it was for checking our IDs. And again, I couldn’t even hear her that well.”
When the couple refused to remove their masks, they were asked to leave. “We didn’t want to make a scene,” Wester said. “We didn’t want to walk out on our tab or anything. I just paid and we left.”
“You know, trying to not only take all the steps to get a babysitter or have my son be watched — that’s a step in itself — but then going out and having to deal with people like this who are anti-maskers … and who are making it like a really political issue when it should be a science issue,” she said. “It’s kind of just made me realize that maybe I shouldn’t go out anymore,” she said. “At least not here in Texas. Not right now. It’s just it’s not a good environment.”
Can you believe this couple was kicked out for wearing their masks to protect their son? What would you have done in this situation?
