Cher is one of the few people in the world who only needs one name. While she is certainly a successful singer, have you ever wondered where she inherited her vocal ability and stage presence? It was from her mom.

Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, was born in Arkansas in 1926. She acted in several movies and TV show in the 1950s including “I Love Lucy” and “The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.” In 1980, she also recorded an album called “Honky Tonk Woman” with the same musicians that played with Elvis Presley; however, she didn’t release the album until 2013.

Also in 2013, Cher worked on a documentary about her mother called “Dear Mom, Love Cher.” The documentary was released on Lifetime, and it chronicled Holt’s life from her childhood through motherhood.

Holt has had some health battles recently. In September, Cher shared on Instagram that her mother had been “Sick Off & On” and had been battling pneumonia.

Now, Cher is sharing even more sad news. Her mother has died. She wrote on Instagram, “Mom is gone.”

Cher did not include a cause of death. Her mother was 96 years old.

Upon hearing the sad news, multiple people sent their condolences to Cher. For example, Hilary Clinton tweeted, “So sorry for your loss, my friend. Sending you all the [love] in the world.”

Actress Marg Helgenberger tweeted, “Oh @cher I’m so very sorry to hear that your beloved mother has passed. My heart goes out to you. What a blessing to have had her in your life for as long as you did. May she rest in peace.”

Allow us to pay tribute to Holt by reliving a sweet moment between mother and daughter. The duo once appeared on The Ellen Show and performed a song from Holt’s album, “Honky Tonk Woman.” The song was a mother and daughter duet called “I’m Just Your Yesterday.” Watch their performance in the video below.
