Actor Kenneth Mitchell, known for his roles in “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Captain Marvel,” has succumbed to a five-year battle with ALS at the age of 49. Mitchell’s family shared the heartbreaking news on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, expressing their condolences over the loss of a cherished father, husband, brother, uncle, and friend.

In a statement, the family acknowledged Mitchell’s diverse acting career, spanning roles as an Olympic hopeful, apocalypse survivor, astronaut, superhero’s father, and four distinctive Star Trek characters. Yet, they emphasized that his most cherished role was that of a family man. As a devoted husband to his wife, Susan, and a proud father to Lilah and Kallum, Mitchell found immeasurable joy in family life.

“Ken was diligent and hardworking in everything he did, but as a father these traits found their fullest expression. He was extremely dedicated to being a positive and playful force in the lives of his children,” the statement read, highlighting Mitchell’s commitment to fatherhood despite the challenges posed by his later disabilities.

Diagnosed with ALS in 2018, Mitchell courageously navigated the progressive neurodegenerative disease that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. By 2019, he had begun using a wheelchair, publicly sharing his health struggles in 2020. Speaking about the initial impact of the diagnosis, Mitchell reflected on the profound change it brought to his life and the emotional journey of grief and acceptance he and his wife underwent.

“I do remember there was something really simple and beautiful in a way, how my wife and I were in the trenches together, and how we from this moment on we’re having to deal with something so severe that was going to affect our lives forever,” he shared with People in 2020. “We grieved and mourned really hard. There was so much unknown.”

The news of Mitchell’s passing has resonated deeply with the “Star Trek” community, where he portrayed multiple Klingon characters on “Star Trek: Discovery” and lent his voice to various roles in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” The official StarTrek.com statement conveyed the condolences of the entire Star Trek family to Mitchell’s loved ones and fans worldwide.
