Earlier this year, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band finished up their European tour, but that didn’t mean it was time for a break. Instead, it was time to set off on another tour, this time, in North America.
The North American tour was originally scheduled to begin on August 9, 2023, and conclude on December 12th, but there has been quite a big hiccup in those original plans. Springsteen has been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease.
On September 6th, Springsteen shared an update about the tour that was most likely disappointing to a lot of fans. Springteen and the E Street Band have made the difficult decision to cancel 8 upcoming shows that were supposed to take place in New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio and Washington D.C.
The statement explains, “Mr. Springsteen is being treated for symptoms of peptic ulcer disease, and the decision of his medical advisors is that he should postpone the remainder of his September shows.” Ticket holders can expect to receive more information when the shows are rescheduled.
Springsteen also contributed to the statement adding, “Over here on E Street, we’re heartbroken to have to postpone these shows. First, apologies to our fabulous Philly fans who we missed a few weeks ago. We’ll be back to pick these shows up and then some. Thank you for your understanding and support. We’ve been having a blast at our US shows and we’re looking forward to more great times. We’ll be back soon.”

Besides leaving fans and ticket holders disappointed, this news also leaves many wondering what exactly peptic ulcer disease even is. According to the Mayo Clinic, peptic ulcer disease happens when there are ulcers in the stomach or a part of the small intestine called the duodenum. Heartburn, nausea and stomach pain are some of the most common symptoms, but many people who have peptic ulcers don’t even have symptoms.
People who smoke, drink alcohol, eat spicy food or have a lot of stress are more likely to have peptic ulcers. If they are not treated, the ulcers could lead to serious problems like internal bleeding, gastric cancer, a hole in the stomach wall or a blockage in the digestive tract.
Hopefully Springsteen will be feeling better and be able to get back on the road to finish the North American tour in the near future. In the meantime, we can enjoy a recap of the European tour.
