If you’re a fan of live theater, you probably know that nothing compares to Broadway. Although streaming services like Disney+ tried to bring the magic of Broadway into our living rooms, it’s just not the same.

Thankfully, Broadway is reopening starting September 14,2021. All 41 theaters will reopen, and shows including “Wicked,” “Hamilton” and “The Lion King” will once again take place in front of a live audience.

If you’re ready to book tickets, there’s one very important thing you need to know. All audience members at all 41 theaters will be required to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. That means the date of the performance needs to be at least 14 days after the second shot of a 2-dose vaccination or 14 days after the first short of a one-dose vaccination.

According to a statement by The Broadway League, “Guests will need to be fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine in order to attend a show and must show proof of vaccination at their time of entry into the theatre with their valid ticket.” In addition all “performers, backstage crew, and theatre staff” will also be required to be fully vaccinated.

Even though everyone will be required to be fully vaccinated, face masks will also be required. Everyone in the audience will be required to wear a face mask unless eating or drinking in a designated area.

This mask and vaccine mandate at Broadway theaters will be in effect until October 31, 2021. The statement explained that “theatre owners anticipate a review of policies in September, and may include a relaxation of certain provisions if the science dictates.”

There are a few exceptions to the vaccination requirement. Children under 12 are exempt. In addition, “people with a medical condition or closely held religious belief that prevents vaccination” are also exempt. In these cases, “guests must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time, or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time.”

Theater owners plan to notify ticket holders about the new vaccine and mask requirements.
