Green Day was performing at London Stadium just hours after the Supreme Court announced their decision to overturn Roe v Wade. Mid-concert, the band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, made a very strong statement about his feelings about the decision. He told the crowd that he would be renouncing his US citizenship. He called the world “stupid” and the US “miserable” and explained that he doesn’t want to go back to America.

The crowd could be heard cheering, and Armstrong paused to let them react. Then he reassured the audience that was “not kidding.” He explained that he plans to move to the U.K. He added, “You’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”

Watch the video below to see Armstrong’s announcement for yourself live on stage, but be aware that he does use explicit language.

That was Friday night. The very next day, while on stage again, Armstrong spoke out against America again. According to concertgoers, on Saturday night, Armstrong said, “F*** the Supreme Court of America.” Then the band played the song “American Idiot.”

Armstrong’s announcement and statements about the U.S. have been met largely with encouragement to actually follow through with his words. Yet some on social media feel that he won’t be any happier in the U.K.

Armstrong is not the only celebrity who is publicly reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision. On Friday, Singer Billie Eilish told the crowd where she was performing, “Today is a really, really dark day for women in the U.S. I’m just going to say that as I cannot bear to think about it any longer in this moment.” She dedicated her next song, “Your Power,” to the Supreme Court justices that overturned Roe v Wade. She explained, “The song we’re about to do is, I think, one of the favorites that we’ve written and it’s about the concept of power and how we need to always remember how not to abuse it.”

Singer Olivia Rodrigo is also appalled by the Supreme Court’s decision. On Saturday, while performing, she told the crowd that the decision made her feel “devastated and terrified.” She explained, “So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this.” She performed a cover of Lily Allen’s song “F-You” and dedicated the song to Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh.

Do you think Armstrong will really renounce his U.S. citizenship?
