The saying goes that you are what you eat. For actor Brian Austin Green, it’s more than that. If he eats something his body doesn’t like, he has horrible side effects that can even cause him to be bedridden.

Back in May 2022, Green opened up to Good Morning America about some of the health struggles he’s had through the years. For example, he has suffered from ulcerative colitis multiple times during his life. He shared, “I had ulcerative colitas for about six, six and a half weeks.” He added, “I was pretty bedridden.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. It impacts the colon and rectum, and it’s caused when there’s inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. There isn’t a cure, but it can be treated to reduce the symptoms.

Now, Green is opening up about his health again. He recently went on the podcast “Sex, Likes and Spray Tans” which is hosted by professional dancer Cheryl Burke. During the podcast, he explained that prior to meeting his fiancée, Sharna Burgess, he “spent four and a half years recovering from stroke-like symptoms without ever having had a stroke but I couldn’t speak.”

He was diagnosed with vertigo and ulcerative colitis. He ended up being bedridden for three whole months, but it  got worse. He added, “Then these neurological things started happening after the vertigo, and that was — it was four and a half years of my life. I got to the point where I shuffled like I was a 90-year-old man.” Green continued, “I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t read. I couldn’t write.”

Eventually, he found a doctor who could help him. He explained, “It was all undiagnosed by Western medicine, so I ended up having to finally find a doctor that is much more into, like, kinesiology and Eastern medicine.” That’s when he found out that he could greatly improve his health by making some major changes to his diet.

This doctor told Green that he had “internal inflammation from gluten and dairy.” Now, he maintains a gluten-free and diary-free diet as much as possible.
