It seems that things are going from bad to worse for red meat lovers! The nation has been rocked by several stories of dangerous contamination in recent months, but we’ve just received news that yet another company has inadvertently released a tainted product–and this time, the situation is very troublesome. And, we mean 6.5 million pounds of potentially deadly food on the supermarket shelves troublesome.
Just this morning, the USDA released a ‘high health risk’ news release that indicated that nearly 6.5 million pounds of “raw, non-intact beef products” produced by JBS Tolleson, Inc. could be contaminated with Salmonella Newport, a bacteria that can cause severe diarrhea and cramping 12 to 72 hours after consumption. Exposure is especially dangerous in young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.
Between the dates of August 5th and September 6th, 57 people across a staggering 16 states reported illnesses stemming from JBS Tolleson, Inc.’s beef products. The contaminated meat was packaged on various dates between July 26th and September 7, 2018, hence the massive amount of meat included in the recall. The products that are a part of the recall are labeled with an establishment number of “EST. 267,” which is visible within the USDA mark of inspection.
Those who have purchased ground beef within the last few months should look in their freezers to double-check that this potentially dangerous meat isn’t being kept on ice to be consumed later. Additionally, if you feel that you have gotten sick from the product, seek out medical help and report it to the FDA.
