Nebraska Bar Leaves Notes On the Windshields of Customers Who Don’t Drink And Drive

We all know that it’s a bad idea to drink and drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous for the driver, anyone else in the vehicle and other vehicles on the road. In fact, nearly 29 people in the United States die every day due to alcohol-related automobile accidents.

The Union Bar and Grill, which is owned by Scott and Carla Swanson, usually has about eight to ten cars parked in their parking lot overnight on any given weekend night. These cars are usually from customers who make the wise decision to get a ride home after drinking at the bar. When the vehicle owners come back to get their cars the next day, they’re in for a surprise.

Austin Martin was one such customer. He drove his truck to the car to meet a friend, and he ended up deciding to leave his truck there overnight. His wife, Janelle, came to pick him up.

The next day, Janelle drove her husband back to the bar to get his truck, and there was a letter on his windshield. It read, “Dear Union Bar and Grill Park Guest, Just wanted to thank you for leaving your car parked overnight. I’m not sure if you consumed alcohol at our restaurant or not, but we want to thank you for not drinking and driving. Bring this letter to the bar and we will give you a hamburger and French fries. Please accept this as a thank you for being responsible. Life is valuable, have a great day.”

Janelle was so impressed by the letter that she posted it on facebook.

Carla Swanson came up with the idea a couple years ago when she saw something about another bar doing something similar. Scott says that he usually leaves the letters on cars parked in the parking lot overnight on weekend nights. He also says that 100% of the people who get the letters take them up on the offer of the free burger and fries.

Scotts says, “It’s a $7 burger, and if it keeps someone out of jail or keeps someone from killing someone, it’s damn well worth it.” He and his wife hope that other bars and restaurants copy this idea.

Janelle’s facebook post is getting a lot of attention. Since she posted the picture of the letter, it has been shared 52,000 times. It has also received a lot of positive comments.

One commenter wrote, “Awesome job Bar owners I give you 5stars.”

Another person commented, “Wish this would happen more often. Sure would cut down all the DWIs and car accidents.”

Do you think more bars should offer some sort of reward for customers who don’t drink and drive?
