The National Rifle Association is set to have their annual convention in Houston, Texas, over Memorial Day weekend. In a video promoting the event, the NRA announced that singer Don McLean, who is best known for his song “American Pie,” would be performing at the event.

The NRA’s convention takes place just days after the worst school shooting to ever happen in the state of Texas. The shooting occurred in Uvalde, Texas, when an 18-year-old high school dropout shot and killed teachers and students at Robb Elementary School. So far, the death count includes 2 teachers and 19 students. Even more students were injured, but a few managed to survive.

After the tragedy at the hands of a gunman, McLean decided not to perform at the NRA event. In a statement, he explained, “In light of the recent events in Texas, I have decided it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform for the NRA at their convention in Houston this week.” He added, “I’m sure all the folks planning to attend this event are shocked and sickened by these events as well. After all, we are all Americans. I share the sorrow for this terrible, cruel loss with the rest of the nation.”

The NRA plans to hold their convention as planned, but on their website, they did express sympathy and sorrow about the tragedy at Robb Elementary School. They explained, “Our deepest sympathies are with the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime. On behalf of our members, we salute the courage of school officials, first responders and others who offered their support and services.” They added, “Although an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal. As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.”
