5 Things to Do Before Moving in Together

For unmarried couples, moving in together has definitely become more popular in recent years. While saving money is not the most important reason for moving in together, it seems that the economy is playing a role in this. The benefit of being able to split the cost of bills and such is definitely a nice perk, but you want to make sure not to neglect the financial compromises and agreements associated with moving in together. Check out these tips from Wise Bread for limiting financial (and emotional) stress for a successful move in:

  • Neutralize the Financial Risk: creating a cohabitation agreement before moving in can help to neutralize the financial risk. While it may be difficult to talk about, figure out who would move out if the relationship were to end. Also, figure out how you would handle finances. You don’t want to have to deal with financial stress on top of the emotional stress if you ever do break up.
  • Do Not Combine Accounts: come up with a strategy for paying bills, but do not sign up for joint checking accounts or credit cards. If your partner goes on a major shopping spree, you could be responsible for 100% of the cost. Wise Bread suggests keeping your accounts separate for now at least.
