5 Famous (and Catchy) Songs About Money
It’s no surprise that money is one of the most popular topics for contemporary music. But not all of those songs are about popping bottles of cristal and spending money faster than it can be made. Here are 5 songs about money that have some kind of lesson or truth in there for us:
Notorious B.I.G. Featuring Mase & Puff Daddy – “Mo Money Mo Problems”
“It’s like the more money we come across, the more problems we see.” That quote from this catchy 90’s song may not seem true, but in actuality, lots of money can bring lots of problems. Just think about it: if you all of a sudden came into some serious money, you’ll have to deal with taxes, perhaps jealousy and negativity from others (or just people looking for a handout), and resisting the temptation to spend it all. More money doesn’t have to mean more problems, but it can if you’re not careful, and if you flaunt it.
Donna Summer – “She Works Hard for the Money”
This song, at the time, turned into a kind of female empowerment anthem. It’s about a woman who works hard to provide for her children – and it’s truly a celebration of this woman, and women like her all around the world. Yeah – “you better treat her right.”
Madonna – “Material Girl”
“Some boys try and some boys lie but I don’t let them play. Only boys who save their pennies make my rainy day.” The original material girl, Madonna, made it clear that men who save money are the ones that she’d spend her time with. And no one could make saving money sound sexier than Madonna.
The Barenaked Ladies – “If I Had a Million Dollars”
What would you do with a million dollars? The Barenaked Ladies had a lot of ideas and put it into this very catchy song. A million dollars may not be what it used to be, but it would still be nice to have, wouldn’t it?
Cee-Lo Green – “Forget You”
Gentlemen (and ladies!): this song has an important lesson about dating. You shouldn’t date someone who just wants you for your money. And if someone treats you badly because of your financial situation, then, well, forget them!
