10 Ways to Preserve Cherries This Summer

Cherries are one of summer’s most beloved seasonal fruits. And if you find yourself with more cherries than you know what to do with, there are many ways that you can “save them for later.” Take a look at some great ways to preserve cherries when you’ve made one too many cherry pies:

  • Dried Cherries: you can easily dehydrate cherries in the oven to enjoy homemade goodies like homemade granola, grain salads, and other baked goods for many months.
  • Pickled Cherries: one of The Kitchn’s favorites:

Sweet and sour pickled cherries were one of my favorite discoveries last year, and I loved serving them as an accompaniment to cheese. I tried several recipes and loved Michael Simon’s combination of spices like orange zest, peppercorns, cinnamon, and coriander. Chef Symon also recommends serving the cherries with poultry and pork.

  • Cherry Vinegar: you can use cherries to flavor any kind of vinegar, but The Kitchn recommends using balsamic vinegar. Try this improvised cherry vinegar recipe.
  • Maraschino Cherries: these kinds of cherries are great on their own or as garnishes for your favorite cocktails. Make your own with this recipe.
