Here’s an Easy Way to Spring Clean Your Blinds Without Taking Them Down

It’s officially spring, and that means it’s time to start spring cleaning. While we like to have a clean home all year long, spring is the time when we usually clean quite a bit more thoroughly. We’re talking moving furniture and getting out the step ladder to reach places that are usually hidden or too hard to maintain on a regular basis.

One item that always makes it onto our spring cleaning to-do (or, to-clean) list is cleaning our windows, but after we get them sparkling clean inside and out, we realize that the window coverings need to be cleaned too.

If you have curtains in your home, it’s probably pretty easy to clean those. Many curtains are machine washable, but be sure to check the tags on yours to be sure. Even if they are machine washable, they may need to hang dry. Considering they’re curtains, that’s pretty easy to manage.

If your window coverings are blinds, then you’re going to have to be a little more hands on. There’s no machine that will wash them for you, but the good news is that you can leave them hanging up while you clean them. Yes, one way to clean them is to take them down and give them a bath, but that’s probably overkill for most situations.

Clean My Space tells us just how easy it is to clean our blinds while they are hanging up. It doesn’t matter if your blinds are vertical or horizontal. These steps will work for both types of blinds.

First, you need to dust the blinds. You can use a microfiber cloth, a duster made specifically for blinds or even a gym sock that you wear like a sock puppet.

After the blinds are free of dust, the next steps is actually cleaning them. You simply pour warm water into a large bowl or bucket and add 3 drops of dish liquid. Yes, you’re going to clean your blinds with dish soap.

Dunk your microfiber cloth in the soapy mixture, wring it out, and wipe down one blind slat at a time, starting at the top. If you have vertical blinds or really tall windows, you might need to use your step stool to reach clear to the top.

These steps work for all blinds with the exception of fabric blinds. You will have to take fabric blinds down in order to clean them.
