How to Make Your Home Smell Amazing with a Clothespin!

When it comes to air fresheners, it’s safe to say that natural is always better. After all, dousing your home with noxious chemicals isn’t exactly the most appealing of ideas! That’s why we’ve searched far and wide for the easiest and safest way to make your home smell sweet—and boy have we found a great one.

Today’s tip comes from the brilliant YouTubers over at The Heathered Nest, a channel that focuses on DIYs that take less than a minute to complete. What we love about their air freshener is that it’s super simple to make and it works completely on its own—no spraying or flames involved.

All you need to do is grab an ordinary clothespin (it MUST be the wooden kind!) and slather some essential oil onto both its inside and outside, up to the part that pinches. Once finished, simply clip on to your air vent and forget about it. Pretty soon you will be met with sweet-smelling air that LASTS!

You can complete this hack in any room, and even in your car, too! Simply douse your clothespin with your chosen oil, and clip on to your vehicle’s vent. It works similarly to the store-bought air fresheners that are made to be inserted into the A/C.

What scent is right for you?

Now, we know that essential oil aisle can be overwhelming, so we did the hard work for you! Here are some of the best scents to use in your home or car….

  1. Lemon

Known to be an energizing scent, lemon has been proven to increase productivity. A must for anyone who works from home or needs to stay focused during a long commute. Protip: Lemon also has ‘masking’ properties, which makes it perfect for bathrooms!

  2. Lavender

If you haven’t reaped the calming benefits of lavender, then you are really missing out. This essential oil has been a staple in aromatherapy for centuries and is one of the few that has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety. This clothespin definitely belongs in the bedroom!

  3. Bergamot

Earl Grey tea lovers, this is the scent for you! Bergamot exudes a fresh, fruity smell without shoving too much sickening sweetness up your nostrils. As far as aromatherapy is concerned, people have been known to use it when they are feeling tired or down, which makes this a great choice for the office or a home gym.

Of course, there are dozens of other oils to try. We suggest mixing them up and changing scents often in order to find the one that works best for you.

Now that you know the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of this all-natural air freshener, it’s time for you to get the full tutorial for yourself.
