‘The Wizard of Oz’ Will Return to Theaters Nationwide for 3 Days to Celebrate Its 80th Anniversary

Each month has something to offer for moviegoers, and we admit that some months are more exciting than others. We know to expect blockbusters during the summer and near the holidays.

But this month, fans of The Wizard of Oz can look forward to seeing it on the big screen! In celebration of the film’s 80th anniversary, Warner Bros., Turner Classic Movies (TCM), and Fathom Events is teaming up to re-release it in theaters.

If you have ever wanted to experience what it’s like to watch The Wizard of Oz in a theater, now is your chance! This Sunday, January 27, will be the first date you can catch it at select locations.

The beloved Hollywood gem will also be showing on two additional dates: Tuesday, January 29 and Wednesday, January 30 at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased nationwide during this limited-time event.

Since 1939, the movie has entertained generations of fans and was nominated for six Oscars in its heyday. The Wizard of Oz won the Academy Award for original song with Over the Rainbow, sung by Judy Garland. We can hear some of you singing it right now.

Based on L. Frank Baum’s novel published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the film captured the imaginations of millions with its fantasy tale of Dorothy, Toto, and her band of helpful friends. And who can forget the Munchkins, Wicked Witch and Glinda, the Good Witch?

Its magical, musical, and adventurous theme continues to win over fans of all ages. With that being the case, tickets are selling out quickly. Interested viewers can purchase tickets through Fandango or by visiting the Fathom Events website.

What makes this year’s screenings so special? Variety reports that it will include an introduction from Ben Mankiewicz, a host for TCM. He will also do a closing commentary and there will be behind-the-scenes footage shared with audiences.

This isn’t the only classic movie that you can expect to return to theaters this year. TCM and Fathom are enticing movie buffs with a string of selections such as Glory, Steel Magnolias, Alien, My Fair Lady, and The Godfather Part II. You can keep up with all the excitement by checking with Fathom Events.

If you miss the boat on this event but want to see it at the theater, there is still a chance for you to catch a screening locally at a different time this year. Some places host special screenings of this old favorite for the community. Look out for summer movie events “on the green.”

Hit the yellow brick road and kick off your year with whimsy by taking advantage of this if you can. If not, you can always stream it through a platform like Amazon Prime or YouTube or by playing the DVD or Blu-Ray. Either way, kick up your feet and enjoy the show!
