A 38-year-old triathlete and social media influencer died Saturday after disappearing during the swim portion of an Ironman competition in Texas.
Mara Flávia, a Brazilian athlete who had built a following of more than 60,000 on Instagram, went missing during the open-water swim in Lake Woodlands — the first leg of the grueling 140-mile race. Authorities began receiving emergency calls early in the morning, with reports of a missing swimmer coming in shortly after 6 a.m., according to Fox 26. Woodlands Township Fire Chief Palmer Buck later told Click2Houston that crews were officially alerted to a “lost swimmer” around 7:30 a.m.

The professional women’s swim wave had started at 6:31 a.m., per the race schedule. Flávia was ultimately recovered just after 9:30 a.m., roughly three hours after she vanished. Officials said her body had sunk about 10 feet below the surface. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that she drowned while taking part in the swim portion of the race. The agency added that its Major Crimes unit will continue to investigate in accordance with standard procedures.

Per the New York Post, a volunteer at the event later described the chaotic and emotional moments as swimmers and onlookers realized something had gone wrong. Witnesses repeatedly pointed to the same spot in the water, saying she had gone under and not resurfaced.
The volunteer recalled one experienced racer clinging to a kayak in shock after witnessing the incident. Determined to help, he repeatedly dove beneath the surface in an effort to locate her.
During one attempt, he said he briefly made contact with her body but was unable to bring her up. He continued searching, driven by the hope he could find her again and pull her to safety.
Reflecting on the experience, the volunteer said the reality of the danger didn’t fully sink in until later. He also paid tribute to Flávia, honoring her determination to take on one of the sport’s most demanding challenges — a goal many aspire to but few achieve.
