If you’re a fan of the “Toy Story” movies, or even if you’re not, you may have heard about the controversy among fans when it comes to the new Disney Pixar movie “Lightyear.”
If you remember the first “Toy Story” movie, a cowboy toy named Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, is the favorite toy of a boy named Andy. Then at Andy’s birthday party, Andy gets a Buzz Lightyear toy, voiced by Tim Allen.
According to the new “Lightyear” movie, Andy wanted this Buzz Lightyear toy because he saw the movie “Lightyear.” So, in a way, “Lightyear” is a prequel to the “Toy Story” movies.
Except it’s not. Many, including Allen, are having trouble connecting the Lightyear character in the new movie to the Buzz character in the “Toy Story” movies. Plot aside, one major disconnect for fans is that the characters are not voiced by the same actor. The Lightyear character in the new movie is voiced by Chris Evans, not Allen.
There have been many rumors swirling among fans as to why Disney and Pixar decided not to cast Allen as the voice of Lightyear. Some explain that it wouldn’t make sense for a toy to have the same voice as an actor in a movie. Others think Disney didn’t want to hire Allen for some reason. Some choose not to care and like the movie regardless. Some think Evans’ voice is similar to Allen’s, but younger, so it makes more sense to cast him.
Allen and Hanks have finally spoken out about what they think of the new “Lightyear” movie and the fact that Allen is not the voice of the title character. In an Interview with CinemaBlend, Hanks was asked how he feels about his movie, “Elvis,” being in theaters at the same time as “Lightyear.” He joked that he “wanted to go head to head with Tim Allen and they didn’t let Tim Allen do it. I don’t understand that.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with Extra, Allen seemed confused about why he wasn’t cast as the voice of Lightyear as well. He said, “I’ve stayed out of this.” He explained that the team that created the new movie “is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.” Allen added that he originally thought that when they said it was a “life action” movie it would be played by real people and not be another animated movie. He said that the new movie “just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy.”
