Erin Moriarty, best known for her role as Starlight on The Boys, revealed on Instagram that she has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease.
“Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body. Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours. Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely. One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner. A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on. It’s been increasing in strength ever since. If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked. Don’t “suck it up” and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. Shit’s hard enough as is.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce too much thyroid hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism. This hormone controls many body functions, so when levels are too high, it can affect multiple organs.
Graves’ disease is more common in women and typically appears in people over 30. Treatment focuses on reducing thyroid hormone levels and easing symptoms. With proper treatment, symptoms can be managed and improved.
Common symptoms include:
- Nervousness or irritability
- Hand or finger tremors
- Heat sensitivity and excessive sweating
- Weight loss despite increased appetite
- Enlarged thyroid (goiter)
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Erectile dysfunction or low sex drive
- Frequent bowel movements
- Bulging eyes (Graves’ eye disease)
- Fatigue
- Thickened skin on the shins or feet (Graves’ dermopathy)
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
- Trouble sleeping
