Snowflakes are one of the most iconic symbols of winter. They might not have any association with a particular holiday, but seeing a snowflake decoration gives you holiday season vibes regardless! Usually we see snowflake decorations cut out of paper (sometimes in a very big way) but this DIY is a new take on the flake entirely!

Whether or not you have a designated “craft area” in your home, we’re certain you have a hot glue gun around somewhere. You know, for those odd projects or last minute outfit emergencies. For this project, we’re going to use your humble glue gun to create beautiful snowflakes, with a little extra sparkle for good measure.

Glue guns have the ability to use sticks that aren’t just plain glue; in this case, we see that they can use something called “sparkle sticks,” which are basically just glue sticks with sparkles. These come in a variety of sparkle colors, but DaveHax uses silver to really capture the look of a snowflake.

Note: You can use regular glue if you please, it will also have that clear, snowflake look! We do love that he chose to go with a little sparkle though.

Press the sparkle sticks through the glue gun as you would and draw your snowflakes onto a spread of baking paper. If you can’t think of a snowflake design off the top of your head, design one on the computer (or print an existing one) and then put the computer paper under your baking paper to trace the image.

This is a great trick so you can get some more complex shapes for your decor! When you’re done, use tweezers to take off the wispy strands of glue that will most likely be coming from your snowflake and scissors to sharpen some of the edges.

If you want to be able to hang your DIY snowflake, it’s simple! All you have to do is hot glue a piece of ribbon or string (we think twine would be great for a rustic look!) from the tip of your snowflake while it’s still wet.

Once you do this, you can hang your flakes from windows, walls, or even from a Christmas tree! These would make really adorable ornaments that you can make with the kids or to give away as holiday gifts!

Instructions

  1. Lay out a piece of baking paper to make your designs on.
  2. Put your sparkle glue stick in the gun and press to get out the rest of any normal glue that’s still inside. Once the glitter comes out, it’s ready to use.
  3. Draw your design onto the baking paper, using your own idea or one found online. Add your string on top if you want to the hang the snowflake.
  4. Leave the snowflake to dry for at least a couple hours. Once it’s entirely firm, peel it off the baking paper.
