There are two things we know for sure. One: no party spread is complete without a tray of deviled eggs. And two: all the creative “eggheads” out there will never stop blowing our minds with their creative and crave-worthy twists on the classic!
Today’s twist is, according to its creator, “the best deviled eggs recipe hands down”. It’s a little spicy, a little tangy, altogether unusual and delicious, all while incorporating an ingredient we’d never have though to include anywhere near any kind of eggs: slawsa.
Yes, you read that correctly. “Slawsa” is exactly what it sounds like: a combination of coleslaw and salsa. Yes, seriously.
The brainchild of Shark Tank contestant Julie Busha, “slawsa” is an unexpected condiment hit that, according to its website, “begins on the palate as sweet and transfers heat undertones that make it addictive atop grilling fare”. And apparently its fans don’t just stop at grilling!
Yum! Since the “slawsa” mixes into the regular yolk-and-mayo filling so completely, this extra dose of flavor will come as a complete surprise to anybody who takes a bite without knowing your secret! How many people do you think will be able to figure it out?
But what to do if you’re not really feeling the whole “slawsa” thing, but still want a fresh take on deviled eggs that adds a little zip, a little flare, and a lot more taste to the classic? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with two varieties of our own!
Crispy bacon crumbles and fiery jalapeño peppers make classic deviled eggs even more devilish in our first option. (The term “deviled” was first coined centuries ago to describe spicy, zesty dishes, after all!) It’s easy to give these eggs their extra punch; all you need to do is mix some diced jalapeños into the traditional mix of egg yolks, mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper, then sprinkle crumbled cooked bacon on top for the extra special final touch.
Loving the south-of-the-border flair but need something a little less devilish? Then try this twist that incorporates one of everybody’s other food favorites: avocados! These Guacamole Deviled Eggs are so easy, and super delicious. All you have to do is add some ripe avocado to the egg yolks, then mix it all up with lime juice, salt, chives, cilantro, and diced Serrano pepper. (Don’t worry; Serranos are less spicy than jalapeños.) That’s it!
No matter which one you choose, you’re sure to knock the socks off of your family and guests expecting regular ol’ deviled eggs. And even though we all still love the original, it’s always great to have options, isn’t it?!
Which deviled egg version do you think you’ll try? Have you ever heard of or tried “slawsa” before? What do you think of adding “slawsa” to your deviled eggs?
