Skip the Salon: Homemade Hair Coloring

Need to spice up or touch up your hair color? No need to make a salon appointment or buy toxic DIY hair color from CVS. Whether you are (or wish to be) a brunette, a redhead or a blonde, there are some easy, natural options for dyeing your hair or adding highlights. Crunchy Chicken stumbled across the following recipes for natural coloring:

  • For Lighter Hair: mix equal parts rhubarb stalks and honey steeped in 3 parts of white wine. After steeping for several hours, strain and apply to hair. Leave in until hair is dry and then rinse out.
  • For Darker Hair: pare a dozen potatoes, cover them with cold water in a pot and let them boil until soft. Strain the liquid. When the liquid is cool, apply to your hair. Leave in until hair dries and then rinse out.
  • For Reddish Highlights: mix 1/2 cup beet juice with 1/2 cup carrot juice and pour over damp hair. Use caution when doing this so that you don’t stain floors or surfaces. Leave mixture in hair for an hour before rinsing out.
