With skin problems, sometimes you might wish that there was some type of magic eraser for your skin. The body’s largest organ is prone to all sorts of damage and whatever you do to keep it clean, tight, and moisturized right makes a difference in its health. But what to make of scars and dark marks?

For some people, skin problems like acne, pimples, rashes, or wrinkles are an ongoing problem. For others, they are occasional irritating visitors that wreak havoc like an Airbnb visit gone wrong. Whichever is the case, instead of using a hodgepodge of chemicals, why not try a DIY natural remedy?

Beauty vlogger Ishita Chanda outlines a method that can be done over 7 days with something you probably already have in your kitchen: raw potato. She demonstrates that it can be used to correct blemishes, dark circles, wrinkles, puffiness, and more! Let’s check out how you can do it at home too.

Potato Beauty Treatment

Materials

  • Potato
  • Knife
  • Peeler
  • Grinder or blender
  • Small bowl
  • Cotton cosmetic pads

Directions

  1. Wash It

Wash the potato before peeling. Ishita notes that washing the potato after you peel it actually washes away its beneficial properties. A big no-no!

  2. Peel It

Peel the skin completely off the potato. Do not wipe or rinse it as the starchy juice is valuable.

  3. Slice It

Cut the potato into round slices, about ½ inch thick.

  4. Cleanse It

Prepare your skin by cleansing it using your normal routine (soap, water, olive oil, etc.) as the first step.

  5. Massage It

Grab a slice of potato and start massaging it into the skin, rubbing it in circular motions all over the face. Ishita calls for you to pay close attention to dark spots and other problem areas, and to continue rubbing for 10 minutes. Leave it on and allow the potato to do its work.

  6. Juice It

Place ½ of your raw potato into a grinder or blender and crush the juice out of it. Remove the pulp and other large pieces until you have enough juice to cover your face.

  7. Pour It

Pour the juice into a small bowl. If the pasty texture bothers you, you can add a little aloe vera juice to the potato juice, but please— do not add water!

  8. Dip and Dab It

Dip a cotton pad into the bowl and dab the juice onto your face. The idea is to use it as a facial mask, so allow it to dry for 20 minutes.

  9. Massage Again

Once dry, take another slice of potato and massage the skin again. The circular scrubbing motion you use will gently exfoliate the skin. Ishita points out that this can be done on the face, armpits, or other regions.

  10. Rinse

Rinse well. Store any remaining juice for up to 4 to 5 days.

Potato contains vitamins and minerals that help make it an ideal beauty treatment for men and women. Ishita also states that potato can help with facial hair, sunburn, and overall skin texture, but to avoid using it on broken or bleeding skin. With this particular technique, it’s important to give it time to work over the duration of 7 to 8 days. Do you have a natural skin care routine? What food wonders do you use? Share in the comments!
