The saying goes that a dollar saved is a dollar earned, but when it comes to a certain rare penny, a penny saved could be hundreds of thousands of dollars earned!
PEOPLE reports that the US Mint has officially stopped producing pennies. That means that the pennies produced in 2025 are the very last pennies in circulation. There were 232 pennies produced that are extra rare, and one set of the rare pennies even sold for $800,000!
Let’s talk about what makes notable features these ultra rare pennies have so that you know if you have one.
First of all, these pennies were produced in 2025, so the year on the penny will be 2025. If you don’t have any 2025 pennies, you don’t have the rare pennies we’re talking about here.
Now that you’re only looking at 2025 pennies, the next thing you want to look for is the omega symbol which looks like this: Ω. If you have one of the rare pennies, the symbol would be on the Lincoln side of the penny on the left side.
Now, let’s talk about a couple more rare types of pennies you can see if you have. Look for pennies from the year 1943. If you have any pennies from these years, check to see if they’re magnetic by seeing if they will stick to a magnet. If they stick to the magnet, they’re not rare. They are made of steel and are common pennies. If they do not stick to the magnet they are very rare. They are made of copper and could be worth quite a bit.
Next, look for pennies from the year 1944. The penny test here is the same as the 1943 pennies, but it actually works in reverse. In this case, the 1944 pennies are rare if they do stick to the magnet.
If you don’t have any pennies that are from 2025, 1943 or 1944, you still might have a rare penny. Regardless of the year, check to see if you have any pennies with an “S” below the year. If you do, that means they were produced at the San Francisco Mint, and that makes them very rare.
